Day 191 #Project365

191-365 grapes.jpg

Most fruits are quite photogenic. This is one of the many things I learn so far in this photography project. The fruit can stand alone by itself or sits together in a bunch it does not matter, they’d make a photogenic object. These grapes were sitting in my kitchen sink where I washed them in my attempt to get rid of the dusty layer on the skin caused by some spraying they did on the plants. But even with the ‘dust’ you can see the beautiful colours of the grapes that ranges from red to dark burgundy.

Day 105 #Project365

105-365 apple

I am still in the mood for shallow depth photo today. I actually started taking photos of a bowl of fruits that was sitting in my friend’s brand spanking new buffet table. The spot light fell on the fruits just so making the normal looking objects suddenly looked quite attractive. And the new buffet table has a special texture as well I thought I’d try to capture it.

But then I got distracted. What else is new. Oh, the photos of those bowls of fruits turned out well, by the way, but I could not help but thinking there was nothing “oomph” about the photos. Besides, how many times have we seen photos/drawings/paintings of a bowl of fruits? It’s almost like a mandatory shot for still life photography 101, isn’t it? So I thought why don’t I try with one fruit and try to shoot it differently. Luckily, there was this “ordinary” looking little black Ikea table hanging around my friend’s house. At a closer look, the ordinary table has quite an unusual surface. The black laminate of the table has some sort of sparkly finish to it. Not smooth, and not matte, but strangely shiny in the non lacquer way. And it just reflect lights in the most unusual way.

Again, I moved things around the house (that is not my own), and positioned the table under one of the many spot lights in the house, and put my one red apple on the table and shoot. I used manual focus and opened the aperture at its widest (f/1.4).

I would like to say special thanks to my good friend AS and PK in Sydney for letting me moving around furniture, dropping one table on the floor (placing a table on top of another table is just a recipe for disaster, btw), and also for letting me heavily manhandled your fruits. Remember to wash them before eating!!!

Day 96 #Project365

96-365 fresh fig

Today was the first time I ate a fresh fig. Ever.

I’ve eaten dried figs before, a lot of times but one time I saw a photo of fresh fig and I was not quite sure what that was until I read the caption and that was when it hit me. I’ve never eaten a fresh fig before.

Growing up in Jakarta, figs were not very common. Fresh nor dried. Fig, or buah Ara in Indonesian, simply were not around. At first I thought maybe it was me who forgot ever seeing/eating this fruit, but after asking my dad about it, his answer confirmed that I’ve never had fig before. Well, he actually said he thought it only existed in the bible. (Adam and Eve used fig’s leaves to cover their you know what). I know, right. Gotta love him. Then I quickly did a search in Google, nowadays more people are growing Figs in Indonesia, but only of certain type.

So, back to my first ever fig experience, I can say it was really pleasant.  Those figs were very soft to touch, they were really ripe. I cut straight in the middle and was just looking at its interesting flesh. There was a lot of details inside this fruit, then I started poking it, squeezing it this way and that before I sucked the flesh in. It’s so sweet, not too juicy, the texture was softer than it looked, and it was really nice.

blue berries

blue berries

These are blue berries huddled up in a bunch. Some were ripe some were so young they were very pale green. From this angle they just look like a big flower. Very peculiar. This image is just me trying out a softer tone. I’ve seen other people doing a really great job with this kind of tone, I’ve never thought that it’s for me. I’ve enjoyed the process so I guess it’s a good practice. I love the end result of this one.
