not. happy. mum.

It was a hot humid day that weekend. Ms K was all dressed up in Indonesian costume ready to join the children’s parade in Civic for the 2013 Canberra Multicultural Festival. The waiting was too long, the day was too hot, the walk from the parking to the venue was too far, well, basically, everything was too wrong for her. And to top it all off, she was extra upset that I did not bring her swimmers so she could ‘swim’ in the pond (with water fountain) while we were waiting for the event to start.

As you can see, this sad face would not listen to reasons (that the ankle-deep pond was not a swimming pool, that swimming naked was not a good idea, that getting herself all wet without a towel insight would be bad before the parade, you get the idea), so she plunked herself down by the pond looking like her world just ended.

Since I have nothing acceptable to offer her, all I did was trying to capture this rare and honest emotions. Ms K is a happy child, she is mostly very cheeky and bubbly; so as much as I hated to see her feeling miserable, I was glad I could capture this miserable expression. This portrait of her shows her personality in a different ‘light’.

A few moments after, the rain came and she bounced back to her old cheerful self and happily running around in the rain, playing with her umbrella and stepped on all the puddles. The rain saved the day.

Day 355 #Project365

355-365, cookie baking

My little elf was very helpful and looking very happy in our last day of baking. I love baking, so these pre-Christmas baking days are one of my favourite days in the year. The house smells wonderful with the smell of cookies baking in the oven, and I truly enjoyed listening to the non-stop chatters of my little girl, who broke into Christmas songs every now and then while she dusted the cookies with sugar.

My mom did a lot of baking too before Christmas when I was a kid. I remember I used to just watch her, and patiently waited to taste anything coming straight from the oven. Those were the good times! I have no memory of me helping her (because I probably didn’t), but I remember I ate a lot of the ‘dud’ ones, you know, the not-so-perfect-in-shape freshly baked cookies. Or ate whichever I could get and got kicked out of the kitchen straight away.

Sigh…. Christmas always makes me feel so homesick…

Day 201 #Project365

201-365 kneepad.jpg

I would never dare to guess what could be inside a four-year-old’s mind. Especially when one insisted that some knee protectors were needed as she was helping me to cut some mushrooms for dinner preparation. An apron to keep her from getting dirty and a pair of socks to keep her feet from getting cold were clearly inadequate to guarantee her safety  and well-being during this whole process. Gotta love a sensible girl!
