the perfect dusk

colored tree

What I feel when standing in a beautiful place that is gleaming with golden hour light can be likened to a kid who stands in the middle of a candy shop. Wide eyed and excited, we like everything we see and we want to take it home. And there is A LOT of things we like. However, unlike the colourful candies that a kid can buy and take home, I can only take the beautiful view I see and capture it in photographs.

As it happened, just last Saturday I was lucky enough to stand in the middle of a beautiful property called Lanyon Homestead, and found myself basking in the glorious golden hour sun. I was that kid in the candy shop. There was so much to capture as the golden light seemed to intensify the beauty of the place. To have some great friends along to enjoy the perfect setting was…perfect. It was a joy to capture these friendly faces looking so relax and happy in a perfectly beautiful backdrop. Autumn dusk has never looked more beautiful.

ps: Lanyon is one of my favourite places to take photos. It’s beautiful all year long, even in winter. Check out this post from my visit last winter for more photos of Lanyon Homestead.

Day 284 #Project365

284-365 bee

This shot was about compromises. I had the delicious late afternoon light, a bee, and the lovely lavender, but I couldn’t get rid of the step on the foreground. Cropping the step out was not an acceptable option. When I sat back and moved a bit, I lost the step, but lost the bee as well, as it was already busy buzzing elsewhere. And the angle of the light in the step-less image looked somewhat different.

So I picked this one in the end, step and all, because I feel it captured the scene just right. And that what matters, I think. This image was taken on the front steps of the house looking out to the road, focusing on the beautifully fragrant plants that were backlit by the sun at the golden hour. It’s a perfectly imperfect shot. A good compromise.

Day 220 #Project365

220-365 swing.jpg

The park was totally deserted this late afternoon. Not at all surprising considering what time  of the day it was and how cold and windy the day had been.  My gal was there for the playground, while I was there to work on my photography homework, which was to do portrait photography with her as my model. It was a challenging session as my child was constantly moving, and when she stopped running around, she decided to hop on the swing and kept on moving. Close to 200 frames later I could not stand the cold anymore and started a plan on how to lure her off the swing and out of the park as she could go on if I let her. I told her a mug of yummy hot chocolate with marshmallow was waiting for us out there, and soon she followed me to the car.

Day 120 #Project365

120-365

Today was the last day of school holiday in Canberra. It’s a typical Sunday in the suburb. We drove around a nearby suburb looking for a fast food restaurant for a quick take-away. Too tired to cook, and couldn’t be bothered with more nutritious choice. Good thing I bothered to look up to see this sunset sky, otherwise we will suffer another book cover pattern shot.

I was just looking at other people’s 365 photos on wordpress and I came across yours. I lived in Canberra for 8 months last year and I missed it so much as soon as I saw your photo. There were the most brilliant sunsets there. Wow, I miss it. Thank you for this.ReplyCancel

Thanks a lot Cassie! I love it when people just “stumbled” on my post and liking it. Sunset scene is one of my fave shot to take, so I have a couple of those in here (invitation to look around my blog is officially extended). I agree with you sunset in Canberra can be quite magical..ReplyCancel

Day 104 #Project365

104-365 handsome bruno

I read an article about shooting with aperture wide open this week. The shots were amazing (you can see them here). Dreamy, as the writer suggested. And it is true that if you get it right you can have brilliant shot, but it is easy to get it wrong, especially if you use the auto focus. Well, that’s my biggest problem anyway. I find it tricky sometimes to “lock in” a focus point, because then just a slight movement to my camera, the focus suddenly “hop” on to the next spot just a split second before I hit the shutter. And just like that a shot was ruined. I have had a lot of these overall blurry shots, or shots where the subject I wanted to focus on was blurry when the background was super sharp. All crap. But, don’t take my word for it, because I have a slight suspicion that it’s just me; this is just the thing that I have to practice on. And, yes, I’ve started shooting with manual focus as well, gave me crossed eyes from time to time, but what the heck.

Anyway, I was using my fast prime lens (Nikkor 50mm, 1.4G) for today’s shot. I bought the lens less than a year ago but it seems that our honey moon period is far from over. It is now my most frequently used lens. I only have two options really, having only two lenses to date. My other lens is a kit lens which I take out for a stroll when the guilt (of not using it often enough) became unbearable.

I went outside to see if there was anything that caught my attention. My shadow, a.k.a Bruno my labrador walking close behind. Well, more like walking with his wet nose on my leg, that’s how close. Then I saw him just staring at the street with the setting sun lighting his face. I was not sure what he was staring at, or what he was thinking, but he was sitting still like that for a few minutes. I opened the aperture really wide at f/1.4, shutter speed 1/800 and using Auto Focus.

Doesn’t he look super duper handsome in this photo?
