Day 293 #Project365

It’s going to be another floral post again today. Very unlike me, I know. But this flower is rather special, because despite its brilliant colours it has such a weird shape. And I love unconventional, weirdly shaped flowers.

These are Irises. They don’t even belong to me. These flowers are my neighbour’s flowers. My across the road neighbour is this lovely old lady who really loves gardening. She has been giving Hubby and me some good advice with regards to our garden, she’s very knowledgable, so we are always happy to listen and take her advice.

Look how special this flower is. On one stem you can see three big flowers on top of each other. Some of its petals are down like normal flowers where the rest stays up, covering the middle part.

This is the middle part that some of the petals cover. Mrs R said its the flower’s male part, I hope I did not hear it wrong, and no, there is no flower with a female part. I asked.

So apparently, I also have Iris in my front yard. The colour is also purple, but the details are so much different from the ones Mrs R has in her garden (see below).

Mrs R said when March comes and when the flowers ‘hibernate’ (forgive me for the choice of words as I totally forgot what the term is), we are going to swap some Irises, so we can enjoy some wide variety of colours of Irises next spring in both our gardens. She has another one of dark burgundy, so I said yes. After we agreed to do this in March, I went back home. Who knows that gardening is a social activity?

Day 240 #Project365

240-365 blooms at dusk.jpg

I always love ‘unconventional’ flowers. Those with interesting shapes or uncommon colours are usually the ones I pick up. Venturing the farmer’s market in the weekend lead me to these bunch of green flowers. They were of two different kind but they were all GREEN in colour. It’s like they don’t need bright ‘conventional’ colours (pink, red, or bright yellow) to attract anyone, they were confident enough just being green. Green as their stem. Green as their leaves.

Touched by the late afternoon sun looking proud and yet so sweet these flowers were making their own fashion statement: it is NOT hard being green. 😉

Day 239 #Project365

239-365 plant sky sun.jpg

I’m as busy as a spider spinning daydreams
I’m as giddy as a baby on a swing
I haven’t seen a crocus or a rosebud
Or a robin on the wing
But I feel so gay
In a melancholy way
That it might as well be spring,
It might as well be spring…

excerpt from the song “It Might As Well Be Spring”

Day 181 #Project365

181-365 flower.jpg

In winter, things look and feel better when the sun is shinning. For a moment today we were blessed to see blue sky and a nice warm sunshine. It certainly did lit up my day, after such drab grey winter colors we were having since the beginning of the week. More people were out and about walking their dogs and got all friendlier and chattier with each other, myself included. There’s a bit of sun seeker in all of us, I suppose. Even this flower from the side road’s weeds look a lot prettier basking in the weak warmth of the sun.

Day 152 #Project365

152-365 cauliflower

Is it a vegetable? Is it a flower? Are those leaves or are those petals? Again, I picked up flowers that I was unknown to me. I asked the staff there, and she didn’t know either. Though we both agreed these flowers looked like cabbage. Anyone knows the name of this flower feel free to write it down in the comment section. Enlighten me.

One thing for sure, though, this flower has a very peculiar look. Look at the details. I love how the tip of each petal looks like it is peppered with tiny green dots. The petals are so big and wide it looks like bunch of leaves. And they are green! Surely they are not flowers. But they are sold in flower section! Curiouser and curiouser. These ‘flowers’ are beautiful but not in a conventional way, but they sure make my living room looks ‘healthy’.

About the photo:
This shot was not properly planned. No previsualisation due to lack of time. I should’ve not placed the flower and vase on the white table, it made a horrible dull of nothingness as the background. Unfortunately there was no time anymore to do a re-shoot, so I tried to salvage this by using some texture. It helped. A bit. It’s a lesson learned for next time. Planning, however simple, is essential, and I have to be sure that I know what image I want to create in my head before the actual shoot.  Oh well, so this amateur photographer’s learning continues on.
