Day 299 #Project365

299-365 riley

I came from the land of black hair and dark brown eyes, that’s why taking photographs of people with other colour of hair and eyes (non black hair, and non brown eyes) is fascinating to me. This boy is the perfect example. R is  3 years old with a thick red hair, dark green eyes and cute freckles peppering his face. His mom and I often have coffee together, but only today I had my camera ready, and only today he could sit still for about 20 seconds after he finished his hot chocolate.

I know that we have to be quick when taking photos of the little ones, but I still amazed how fast we really have to be. Twenty seconds were all I had before the sugar from his hot chocolate kicked in. No time to wipe off the chocolate from his mouth, little boys are known to despise all kind of cleaning, and no time to adjust the set up of my camera. If I could only close the aperture a bit more, I’d be able to get sharper focus on the whole face and hair. (I underestimated the brightness of the light inside the cafe). But again, no one could beat the effect of sugar in little bodies, so in one second when I looked away from him to look at my camera setting, he’s gone…sigh…

Catch him next time, I will.

Day 80 #Project365

80-365 baby gal

I was happy to inform that no bribing was conducted in taking this photo. I just had her ‘confined’ in her bath tub filled with bubbles, that way she couldn’t go anywhere. Trying to get her to sit still was proven challenging I gave up on asking her to look at me.

Ever since I had my kids I started to like taking really close up shots on them. Not always of their faces. Sometimes their chubby little fingers, or their feet, or like now, I focused on her lashes, thinking how long they are. I always enjoy looking back at these photos and wonder how fast time gone by and how much I cherished those moments when I could carry them in one arm, tiny limbs and all.

My Ms 4 was busy helping her rubber ducky to drink from a cup when I took this shot. I love the look of concentration on her face, and feeling really grateful that she doesn’t take after me in eye lashes department. What a lucky duck!

Day 75 #Project365

75-365 lirikan

For someone who hates to be photographed Mr 8 certainly knows how to pose. Just a second after he pulled this fierce look, he went back to his usual goof. I had to bribe him so I could get him to sit for me while I took the shot. Yes, the whole 5 minutes, which he complained felt more like an hour.

This is actually the kind of photography that I like. Portraits of people, including kids. I love capturing people’s expressions. I haven’t taken a lot of people/kids’ photos for this project because, well, face it, to get a decent portrait using an iPhone one needs just a bit more extra time. Not much more time, just a minute or two more, but for kids, it’s a minute or two too long.

I love today’s photo because I feel that making it black and white really helped bringing his expression out and made his eye the focus of the photo. I will do more bribing to both kids so I can get better portraits using the iPhone, while learning to do the same thing using my DSLR as well. I probably need to be a bit more creative in my bribing in the future to get better ‘results’.
